Small mammals of the Post Oak Savannah in east-central Texas

Inventory of the terrestrial vertebrate fauna at two Texas Parks and Wildlife Department sites during 1994-1995 presented the opportunity to examine the diversity of the small-mammal community of the Post Oak Savannah vegetational region. Sampling documented only slightly more than half of the expected species of rodents and insectivores at these sites in relation to the biodiversity documented in the literature for Freestone and Limestone counties. Many of the: species present occurred at densities much lower than previously found in similar habitats elsewhere in the region. A westward extension of range is also reported for Oryzomys palustris, the marsh rice rat, in Freestone County.
