Twelve tropical cyclones formed in the South Pacific and southeast Indian Ocean during the 2000-01 tropical cyclone season. Of these, four formed in the South Pacific east of 160degreesE. Cyclone numbers in the Australian region were slightly below average, while numbers in the South Pacific were significantly less than average. The season was characterised by moderate La Nina conditions, weakening towards the end of the season. Cyclone occurrences were linked to active phases of the 30 to 60-day intraseasonal oscillation.
