CVI Tyranno-SA/SiC composites with various PyC and SiC interlayers

The mechanical properties of Tyranno-SA/SiC composites were investigated by three-point bending tests. The composites were fabricated by isothermal forced flow CVI process. Various pyrolytic carbon (PyC) and Sic fiber-matrix interlayers were employed by isothermal CVI process. Single fiber push-out tests were conducted to examine the interfacial shear stress (ISS). The results revealed a relatively strong ISS of the composites. Both the proportional limit stress and ultimate bending strength showed a tendency to increase with increasing the PyC layer thickness up to as large as 200nm. Crack deflections, fiber debonding and pullout were observed on the fracture surfaces of all the layered composites by means of scanning electron microscopy.
