The joint laser task force of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Inc., devised a survey designed to obtain information about prevalence of laser use, including experience and training. Two thousand five hundred eight-two questionnaires were sent, and 885 replies were received and analyzed by an independent research and consulting firm. Conclusions about demographics, experience and training, and preoperative and postoperative treatment regimens were obtained. Incidence and care of complications or side effects were also detailed. Use of the laser in blepharoplasty surgery was also established. A determination was made indicating laser use for transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty. Complications and side effects were determined and compared with those of conventional blepharoplasties. It is hoped that the summary of this large collective experience will provide useful information to plastic surgeons about laser surgery. Additionally, the information can be promulgated to patients for informed consent and may serve as a basis to reduce risks of liability or malpractice.
