The giant magneto-optical effect in MnBiAl alloy films

Giant Kerr rotations, 3.20 degrees at 632.8 nm and 2.04 degrees at 400 nm, have been observed in MnBi0.47Al0.15 alloy films. The giant magneto-optical effect is attributed to a new MnBiAl phase with a relatively short lattice constant (c) compared with that of undoped MnBi phase. A linear correlation between Kerr rotation theta(K) and reciprocal-lattice vector K-[100] is also unravelled for the MnBi(Al) alloy system. This suggests that the enlarged matrix element due to the hybridization enhancement between Pi 6p and Mn 3d states is responsible for the observed phenomena.
