摘要
To increase the fertility of drained peat soils and protect them from pyrogenic degradation, sand is often applied to their surface. The sand is either mixed with the material of the plow layer (mixed sanding) or is left on the soil surface to form a continuous sand cover. In both cases, the application of sand affects the physical properties of peat soils, including their bulk density, solid phase density, porosity, shrinkage capacity, and fissuring. The most pronounced changes in these properties take place upon the application of sand in the form of continuous surface cover. The additional pressure exerted by the sand and agricultural vehicles leads to the compaction of the subplow horizon. The hydraulic conductivity of the plow layer decreases by 20-25 times in comparison with the control, and its absolute values does not exceed 0.06 m/day. Under these conditions, an aquitard is formed at a shallow depth inducing the stagnation of gravitational water. This phenomenon suppresses the development of plants. Measures to protect drained peat soils from compaction are suggested.
