Critical Success Factors for Construction Project Management in Nigeria

Project managements are employed to provide a means of efficient use of resources in order to achieve predetermined objectives. However, in Nigeria many construction projects are completed with time and cost overrun and poor quality standard which result in poor performance of these projects. This study was conducted with the purpose of identifying critical success factors (CSFs) of construction projects management in Nigeria. A questionnaire survey was employed to determine the relative importance of thirteen proposed CSFs for construction projects management in Nigeria. A total of 450 questionnaires were shared out to professionals in construction industry by means of snowball sampling technique. Subsequently, 293 questionnaires were returned completed which represents 65% response rate. The data collected were analysed by means of relative importance index and factor analysis. The results revealed that the three most important factors are competent project manager, good project planning and the use of adequate communication system. Factor analysis produced three principal factor classifications for the thirteen critical success factors these are: competent personnel, effective project implementation and commitment of project participants. These factors should be given adequate attention in the development of both public and private sector construction projects.
