Aerodynamic stability of Tsing Ma Bridge

The problem of aerodynamic stability has been a major concern in the design and construction of the Tsing Ma bridge. Extensive wind tunnel tests have therefore been carried out to investigate the aerodynamic stability of the bridge under erection and completion stages. Results of wind tunnel testing showed that under both conditions with and without traffic and trains on the bridge-deck, the critical wind speeds for divergent instability are above the designated threshold criteria. The response amplitudes due to vortex shedding for both bridge-deck with and without traffic and trains are generally small and acceptable for design and operation.
