Radiation-induced malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the head and neck

It was the intention of these case reports and discussion to provide a brief review of head and neck sarcomas. In addition, we wanted to remind the reader about postirradiation sarcoma. Several cases of radiation-induced MFH have been reported. However, very few cases of radiation-induced MFH are in the head and neck literature. In our patients MFH was not considered in the prebiopsy differential diagnosis. With such an unusual neck mass and without a primary in the upper aerodigestive tract, MFH should have been considered in patient 2, who had a history of radiation to the region. In addition, when the fine-needle aspiration revealed poorly differentiated, bizarre looking cells that could represent metastatic SCCA, MFH should have been included in the differential diagnosis.
