Devotional presents between Spain and Rome: Nazarene by Luisa Roldan

Devotional presents played a significant role in diplomatic relations between Spain and Rome. This practice was widely accepted by the Crown and was followed by other institutions and individuals who, through it, attempted to encourage the development and the success of their business in the Papal Court. Artists like the Spanish sculptress Luisa Roldan, also known as La Roldana, used this singular practice by sending, or at least trying to send, some of their works to Rome. The well-known Nazarene sculpted by La Roldana was conceived as a devotional present for the Pope Clement XI, although he never received it.
