Psychoeducation in patients with double diagnosis of schizophrenia and substance abuse

Psycho education in inpatients with dual diagnosis of addiction with schizophrenia/psychosis. Objective Practicability of a brief but intensive psycho-educative group programme for clients with a ICD 10 -F1x.2 plus a F20.0 or F1x.5-diagnosis on a detoxification unit with a short hospitalisation period. Method Three session education in open group setting of 45 minutes duration, once weekly over a period of 4 weeks. Results The program started in January 2005, first data is presented. An increasing level of compliance was noted. Conclusions In the context of mainly first time admissions of drug intoxicated patients with psychosis we found in the primarily unmotivated patients positive results, despite the expected problems with the open group setting, changing motivation and low stress-resistance due to the psychosis. Further exploration appears justified.
