摘要
Observations and models of the solar wind are reviewed. New important results, from ongoing heliospheric and solar missions, have been obtained by means of in-situ measurements of particles and fields and by remote sensing of the solar atmosphere through imaging and photon spectroscopy. The observations are evaluated in connection with recent modelling efforts to understand theoretically the origin of the solar wind in the three-dimensional corona of the Sun. Special attention will be given to the source region of the steady and fast solar wind originating in the quiet chromosphere and transition region of the polar coronal holes. Acceptable models of the unsteady slow wind, originating in the dynamic equatorial streamer belt from which the global heliospheric current sheet evolves, do presently not exist.
