摘要：
This paper addresses the parameters which will shape the future of engineering research from the perspective of a designer in the construction industry. Topics covered include engineering science, design, innovation, risk export, the role of research institutions, intellectual property and research funding. A case study is presented which demonstrates how one sector of the construction industry supported an ambitious and generic research programme where there were no obvious beneficiaries apart from the community at large.
