High air change rates in laboratories remove the contaminated air, but these rates are set without measuring the contaminants in the space. However, if the same IAQ procedures, codes and standards that are used for ordinary spaces are used in labs (in addition to normal laboratory safety controls), the energy will be only that required to maintain safe concentrations of measured contaminants within the space. United States Secretary of Energy (2009 to 2013) and Nobel Prize winner Dr Steven Chu has been a strong advocate of energy conservation especially in older buildings.(1)
