Effects of tension during rolling on the critical current density of Ag-sheathed (Bi,Pb)2223 superconducting tapes

Ag-sheathed (Bi,Pb)(2)Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox tapes were prepared by the oxide-powder-in-tube method. The effects of tension during intermediate rolling between sinterings have been investigated. It has been revealed that either appropriate front or back tension improves the critical current density J(c). Back tension is more effective than front tension. The optimum back tension has been found to be similar to 5 MPa. The application of tension suppresses the sausaging of the silver/oxide core interface, improves the grain alignment of the oxide core and results in higher J(c). (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
