***TRIPLE STAR*** - The state-of-the-art and most efficient production line for wood free coated papers

The concept of the ***TRIPLE STAR*** paper per production line pointing the way ahead with state of the-art technique and technology was worked out in close co operation of KNP LEYKAM and VOITH SULZER PAPIER-TECHNIK. With an annual output of 470,000 t it is the world-wide largest production line for high qualify wood free coated papers. After a site press and a hardnip calender the paper gets the first coating online in the paper machine. In a separate coating line both paper sides are coating again twice each. A new winding concept had to be developed which is able to rewind the smooth and dense papers with a total weight of up to 200 g/sqm at a speed of up to 1,800 m/min after the coating unit and 2,500 m/min at the rewinder. This development became necessary mainly because of the extremely large reels with a diameter of up to 3.5m which reach a wight of 120 t The desired surface smoothness of the paper is reached by means of the two offline Janus calenders, each of with is equipped with eleven rolls. The potential of the Janus calenders comprises mat up to high gloss super calendering. After a construction period of 18 months the line started production on 12th October 1997 - two weeks before the actually fixed date - and immediately started continous production. Already the first results from the laboratories and printing companies confirm that the concept chosen is all right and that all expectation concerning quantify and qualify can be met The essential components responsible for the great succes of the line are presented.
