Controlled shot peening is a recognized metallurgical cold working process to improve the bending fatigue life of gear teeth, increase resistance to pitting at the pitch line, and to raise the resistance to scuffing of high speed gears. As a side benefit, controlled shot peening offers improved lubricating properties. This aspect of the impact prestressing technique is little known and two forms of improvement will be described.
