Analyzing extraction of non-timber forest products in Pintao, Venezuela

This paper describes non-timber forest product (NTFP) extraction by the community of Pintao (Venezuela). Data were collected in Pintao from January 17 until February 16, 1996 through a household survey (n=24) and a one-day footpath interview. NTFPs were also identified at local markets. Information was collected on households, and extracted NTFPs were identified and classified according to use-category. A model was developed and estimated by logistic regression to explain decisions to extract NTFPs for utensils and crafts. Results suggest that the extraction of NTFPs for utensils and crafts increases with age and per capita income and decreases with level of education. The forest is important to the people of Pintao because it provides the land base for shifting cultivation and products for subsistence needs and income generation.
