Very serious and very public security debacles can lead the general public to believe the software industry is unable protect internet users from cyber attacks. In May 2017, a worldwide cyberattack was launched by the WannaCry ransomware cryptoworm that targeted computers running Microsoft Windows operating systems. One of the largest agencies struck by the attack was National Health Service (NHS) hospitals1 in England and Scotland, resulting in disruptions to magnetic resonance imaging scanners and blood storage refrigerators, causing the NHS to turn away 20,000 hospital appointments and surgeries and diverting ambulances.
