摘要
In the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian historical drama made a sweeping move into the sphere of popular art, with entertaining and retrospective tendencies prevailing. They received a full expression in V. P. Burenin and F. E. Zarin's play V Vek Ekateriny (In the Age of Catherine), staged at the Suvorin Theater in 1914. Its distinctive features are: absence of a "historical" story line and serious themes (power struggle, philosophy of history); melodramatics; tendency towards the synthesis of arts (dance, painting, singing, music); a quotation layer in which easily identifiable references to well-known or popular works merge with casual borrowings and reminiscences; summarily, this leads to the emergence of "retro".
