摘要：
Mechanics and materials, closely related and complementary to each other, are essential elements in all of the transcendent technologies in the twenty-first century and in the new economy. The transcendent technologies include nanotechnology, microelectronics, information technology and biotechnology. Research opportunities and challenges of the theoretical and applied mechanics as well as engineering materials in the exciting information age are presented and discussed.
