A Broadband Transimpedance Amplifier (TIA) for Visible Light Communication in 0.18 μm CMOS

摘要
This paper presents a broadband inductorless transimpedance amplifier for visible light communication (VLC) systems. The presented TIA utilizes shunt-shunt feedback topology to increase the TIA bandwidth. Also the regulated cascode (RGC) structure is employed as input stage to further decrease the input impedance of the TIA. The assumed modulation is On-Off Keying (OOK) and the TIA is designed and simulated in TSMC 0.18 mu m CMOS technology using Cadence analog virtuoso. The simulated results show that the TIA consumes 10mA current from 1.8V power supply (excluding the output buffer) while achieving the transimpedance gain of 68.8 dB Omega and the -3 dB bandwidth of 5.5GHz in the presence of 650fF photodiode input capacitance. The simulated TIA presents a low input referred noise density of 19 pA/root Hz to satisfy the sensitivity requirements of VLC links. A measured 7.8 Gb/s data-rate is achieved through the use of wideband circuit design techniques.
