摘要
Several types of in-clinic heartworm tests are available that provide a fast, convenient way to determine the heartworm status of dogs and cats. To evaluate the accuracy of these tests it is necessary to know the sensitivity and specificity of the various methods, along with the prevalence of heartworm disease in the population being tested. Antigen kits are commonly used to check for adult heartworms, but microfilarial and antibody tests are also useful. False-positive and false-negative results may occur when testing dogs and cats for heartworm disease, which may lead to unnecessary treatment or inappropriate recommendations.
