Numerical time-domain simulation of planar chiral metamaterials

摘要
Asymmetric planar split-ring structures (planar chiral metamaterials) are investigated numerically in the time domain. Resonant asymmetry in transmission, reflection and absorption for right- vs. left-handed circular polarization (circular birefringence and dichroism) is observed. Distributions of current confirm the surface plasmon polariton nature of resonant excitation and its polarization sensitivity. Varying the distance between split-ring elements changes the width and location of the resonance peak. This indicates that planar chirality is intrinsic, but is strongly influenced by inter-element coupling.
