Shear strength and swelling of compacted partly saturated bentonite

Undrained shear strength and swelling pressure have been among the properties tested of bentonite seals for high-level radioactive waste repositories that are being prepared for use in the Czech Republic. The properties of Czech raw Ca/Mg bentonite and industrial Na bentonite have been tested. The specimens were compacted by pressures in the range of 0.5 to 100 MPa. The influence of low water content on the pore water suction, shear strength and one-dimensional collapse or swelling has been measured and numerically modeled.
