摘要：
We present a phenomenological model of first and second-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD) induced by randomly varying birefringence in single-mode optical fibers. The model modifies previous results, and statistically predicts the maximum bit rate attainable in an optical fiber transmission link. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons.
