摘要
Composting is most commonly perceived as a waste management process. As a result the biological stability of composts can vary substantially, and their agronomic value is rarely specified. However it is possible to manage the composting process to maximise the fertiliser and soil health properties of the product. Managing the bulk density, the water content and the temperature profile of the windrow can substantially improve microbial activity, and the mineralisation of nutrients. Quality controlled composts have the potential to improve the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil. To maximise the net present fertiliser value of the product, the end-point of the composting process must be dictated by the availability of nutrients and indicators of biological stability. Assigning carbon credits to the biologically active organic carbon fraction of a compost will enhance the adoption of composting for the sustainable recycling of organic waste.
