Geomattresses in erosion control - An overview of design criteria

Geomattresses filled with sand or mortar can be a good and often cheaper alternative in erosion control for more traditional materials/systems as rock, concrete units or asphalt. These new systems were applied successfully in a number of countries and they deserve to be applied on a larger scale. The main obstacle in their application is however the lack of proper design criteria. An overview is presented on stability criteria of geomattresses and their limitations.
