A generalized mathematical assessment on the behaviour of polysaccharides during the Acetosolv processing of Eucalyptus globulus wood

Eucalyptus globulus wood samples were subjected to Acetosolv delignification in concentrated acetic acid media at 110, 120 or 130 degrees C using 0.2, 0.3 or 0.4% HCl as catalyst. Samples of both liquid and solid phases were obtained under selected operational conditions, and analyzed for cellulose, hemicelluloses, sugars and furfural. A kinetic model (based on pseudohomogenous, first-order kinetics with sequential and side-reactions) provided a satisfactory interpretation of results, allowing a generalized interpretation of the experimental trends. The information obtained was useful for simulation and design purposes.
