摘要：
The metallurgical area of Minas Gerais is seeing an increase of auto-parts manufacturing, for which tools and dies are extensively used and contribute to a significant part the cost. To increase die life, failure analysis of various dies was performed and the results showed that abrasive, adhesive and erosive wear combine with fatigue and fracture to degrade dies used in pressing and cutting operations. Ion plated TiN and TiCN with hardness higher than 2000 HV were produced on a BAI640 R PVD coating unit. Their wear behavior was investigated on a Pin on I)isc tribometer and a scratch tester. The results are presented and discussed to show the effect of substrate hardness and hard coatings on the wear behavior of dies.
