Die Letalitat von COVID-19 liegt zwischen 35 und 62%, sodass die Suche nach wirksamen Therapien ungebrochen ist. Zusatzlich zu direkt antiviral wirkenden Medikamenten wie Remdesivir werden dabei auch Substanzen verwendet, die am Immunsystem der Patienten ansetzen. Sie sollen u.a. die oft fatale uberma ss ige Freisetzung proinflammatorischer Zytokine (Zytokinsturm") verhindern.
