Complication after hepatic resection for hepatocellular carcinoma

Post-operative complications are often experience after hepatic resection. In particular, abdominal abscess and bile leakage frequently occur. Here we report the complications after hepatic resection, and also describe how to reduce these postoperative problems. The above complications occurred in 15 patients out of 43 patients (35%). Significant factors related these complications included liver function with clinical stage II disease, resection of segment 8, intraoperative blood loss more than 1400ml, and tumor size 5cm or more. However none of the patients had liver failure or MOF because we performed US frequently after operation and had adequate drainage in early stage after the operation. In conclusion; for patients with a high risk of complications, there should be more careful management after hepatic resection.
