The state of TRIBOLOGY is mixed. Overall, tribology is a compelling and vital art but not a coherent community? There is great emphasis on, and progress in several scientific aspects and in routine maintenance aspects of the field but almost no product engineer has the tools for estimating product life with useful precision, from first principles. Further; very, few people at all can predict frictional behavior neither the level of friction nor the propensity of sliding bodies to vibrate. What is missing?
