摘要
Necrotising Enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common acquired gastrointestinal emergency in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). Out of a total of 500 neonates admitted in our unit in 4 years, 31(6,2%)developed NEC. The incidence of NEC was higher among premature infants with a lower birth weight (6.9% vs 5.02%). The incidence of severe NEC needing surgical intervention was also higher in smaller neonates (66% vs 40%). The incidence of NEC and severe NEC needing intervention was also higher among neonates with a lower gestational age. The mortality rate was 25%. Low birth weight and low gestational age are important risk factors for the development of NEC. Early detection of NEC and prompt management will contribute to a better outcome.
