Intense transport of bed load in steep flume

Transport of bed load and interrelated bed friction are studied for sediment-laden flows in the upper plane bed regime of open-channel flow. Experimental results for model sediment (a fraction of plastic grains) in our new tilting flume are discussed and compared with results for similar flows in other laboratory. The upper plane bed regime seems to be divided into two regions (weak-transport region and intense-transport region) by a threshold value of the Shields parameter. Based on the results, modifications are suggested for the transport formula and the bed friction formula to cover intense transport at high bed shear.
