The role of the occupational and physical therapist in the rehabilitation of the older adult with mental retardation

The aging population in America includes persons who are diagnosed with mental retardation and developmental delay. As this population increases, it will require rehabilitative services in community-based settings. The special concerns of aging in this population carry unique challenges for the health care professional. Occupational and physical therapists need to be prepared to deliver services to these persons. This article examines the health care needs of the older adult with mental retardation. The role of the occupational and physical therapist in the continuum of care will be examined through case study examples.
