摘要
Research into Quality of Life issues in oncological studies, has yielded remarkable results that may not only influence treatment decisions, but also help to enhance cancer patients' quality of life. Mutilating surgical procedures, e.g. colostomy, frequently result in impaired body image, sexual dysfunction and loss of self-esteem. Medical and psychosocial support aims at reducing distress and enhancing patients' capacity to adjust to functional impairment. 10% to 30% among cancer patients are at risk for adjustment disorders, mainly anxiety and depression. Early recognition of these patients at risk is crucial, in order to initiate appropriate psychosocial interventions. Pay cho-educational and psychotherapeutic support has consistently proven effective, in terms of decreased distress and enhanced quality of life.
