Legislative Cohesiveness in the Most Important Chamber: The Case of Chile's Senate, 1990-2018

With the 4741 roll call votes in the Chilean Senate, we evaluate whether the determinants of legislative cohesion identified for the Chamber of Deputies also apply to the Senate. In the Senate, the ruling coalition is more cohesive than the opposition. There is not any greater cohesion when it comes to bills that are more important, sponsored by the president or more advanced bills. There is less cohesion on bills in the last year, but no greater cohesion in the first year of a term.
