Fast Intra Mode Decision by Estimating the Lower Bound on the Rate-Distortion Cost for HEVC

摘要：
New intra coding in HEVC can improve coding efficiency while the encoding complexity is increased significantly. To reduce encoding complexity preserving rate-distortion (RD) performance, we estimate the lower bound on the rate-distortion (RD) cost of a prediction unit with non most probable modes and the lower bound on RD cost of four sub coding units. Based on the estimates, we introduce early termination methods for fast intra prediction mode decision and fast coding unit size decision for HEVC. Experimental results show the encoding time can be reduced by 22.4% on average without RD performance loss.
