A liquid micromodification of the DNA-repair test with the wild repair proficient and three repair-deficient strains of Escherichia coli was used for determination of the genotoxic effect of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (vanillin) and other phenolic compounds. The negative results obtained were confirmed by the assessment of the number of revertants via the Ames test. The ability of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (vanillin) and 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (o-vanillin) to increase the viability of cells and to decrease the number of mutations in bacteria pre-treated with 4-nitrochinolin-1-oxide was verified.
