Virtualization is what makes the cloud an economically attractive alternative to dedicated datacenters. This technique takes advantage of an apparent knee in Moore's law that has led to multicore chips and immense amounts of data storage. The primary purpose of virtualization is to allow a computer to be used by multiple processes without interfering with one another. Virtualization has many advantages that benefit anyone with a large-scale software service. Besides offloading the cost maintenance and configuration, virtual systems can offer cheap prepositioning of extra capacity, resiliency due to multiple copies, easy migration and replication.
