The evolution of cultural sensitivity in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd edition (DSM-III); 3rd edition, Revised (DSM-III-R); and 4th edition (DSM-IV) is described Five improvements in the DSM-IV are discussed: (a) descriptions of specific cultural features, (b) glossary of culture-bound syndromes, (c) outline of cultural formulation, (d) broader definition of Axis IV, and (e) new ''V codes''.
