Universal access to information technology in developing countries

Assuming, as one must, that access to information technologies in the rural areas of developing countries will be based at the communal rather than the individual level, we examine a variety of technologies that are suited to this purpose. These include wireless technologies for use in schools, low-cost village kiosks, public telephones that facilitate incoming as well as outgoing calls, low-cost computers with removable smart cards that allow a single unit to be shared by many users and the use of school computers for adult education outside the times when they are in classroom use.
