Adrenoleukodystrophy: An important cause of adrenal insufficiency

Adrenoleukodystrophy is a rare X-linked metabolic disorder that is associated with adrenal insufficiency. We present a case report and discussion of the clinical and basic science findings of the disease. Three points of particular importance to the endocrinologist are: 1) increased frequency of adrenal insufficiency in the disorder; 2) adrenal insufficiency may antedate the onset of neurologic symptoms in the disorder; and 3) primary hypogonadism and subsequent osteoporosis may be complications.
