Aircraft constructed largely from composite materials offer significant improvements in operating cost, passenger comfort and environmental impact. These new technologies have necessitated a review of the way aircraft are tested to ensure survivability against lightning strikes. The Society of Aerospace Engineers (SAE) prepares technical input to support the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) and the European Organisation for Civil Aviation Equipment (EUROCAE). In December 2007, the latest revision of RTCA DO160 was released. The EUROCAE equivalent document ED14 has also been issued.
