The Department of Computational Science offers interdisciplinary undergraduate major programmes in Computational Chemistry, ComputationacMathematics, and Computational Physics. There are currently a small core of faculty members and several postdoctoral research fellows in the Department. Faculty members from other departments in the Faculty of Science also contribute to the teaching of courses offered by the Department. Teaching facilities include two clusters of workstations (one comprising of 45 pen-tium-based Linux workstations, the other of 15 SGI Indigo and 8 HP9000/712 workstations) and networked multimedia personal computers. Students and staff in the Department also have access to the Cray J90 supercomputer and the Fujitsu AP3000 MPP machine on campus, as well as the NEC SX3, IBM SP2, and Cray T94 supercomputers at the National Supercomputing Research Centre (NSRC). Major research areas in the Department include computational statistical and condensed matter physics, nonlinear dynamics and complex systems, scientific visualization, neural computing, computational quantum chemistry and molecular modelling, computational fluid dynamics, geometric modelling, wavelet analysis and applications, signal and image processing. There are strong links between &e Department and other national research centres (NSRC, Institute for Materials Research and Engineering, Bioinformatics Centre, Centre for Remote Imaging and Signal Processing) and the Defense Science Organization of the Ministry of Defense. Ties with other academic institutions and research centres overseas are maintained and the Department is fast gaining international recognition. Applications are invited for faculty appointments from candidates who possess a PhD degree or its equivalent in any of the following areas: + Scientific Visualization + Complex Systems + Neural Computations + Geometric Modelling + Symbolic Computing + Computational Biology + Computational Fluid Dynamics Parallel Scientific Computations + Computational Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics + Quantum Chemistry (molecular modelling, computer-aided drug design) Duties include teaching, research and some administrative work. Besides appointments on normal 3-year contracts, visiting appointments for one or two years will also be considered. Gross annual emoluments range as follows: Lecturer S$ 58,390-74,300 Senior Lecturer S$ 67,940-138,090 Associate Professor S$ 122,460-17 0,100 (US$l.OO = S$1.44 approximately) In addition, a 13th month Annual Allowance (of one month's salary) and an Annual Variable Component (of normally 2 months' salary) may be payable at year end, under the flexible wage system, to staff on normal contracts. The commencing salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications, experience and the level of appointment offered. Leave and medical benefits will be provided. Depending on the type of contract offered, other benefits may include: provident fund benefits or an end-of-contract gratuity, a settling-in allowance, subsidised housing, education allowance for up to three children subject to a maximum of S$16,425 per annum per child, passage assistance and baggage allowance for the transportation of personal effects to Singapore. Staff members may undertake consultation work, subject to the approval of the University, and retain consultation fees up to a maximum of 60% of their gross annual emoluments in a calendar year. All academic staff will be given a networked personal computer with access to a Cray supercomputer, UNlX hosts, departmental laser printers, a wide spectrum of software, on-line library catalogue, CD-ROM databases, Video-on-Demand, lNtv and Internet. 摘要
Participants from academia, industry, and government were brought together to examine the issues and activities in education, employment, and research and development during the first IEEE Computer Society Workshop on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE). Discussions during the conference addressed such issues as developments in using the World Wide Web to aid traditional course work; accuracy, correctness and reliability of large production codes; and the relationship between computing and science.
