Object oriented programming has penetrated nearly all facets of software systems. This paper concerns the use of Simula, an OOP language for simulation and modeling. This paper examines the problem of assigning tasks to processors in distributed systems; we provide a genetic algorithm formulation of this problem and use Simula to solve it. We comment on the execution time characteristics of the Simula implementation for a number of data sets. We also compare the performance with an Artificial Intelligence approach (A*) to solving the assignment problem. The contribution of this paper is to demonstrate that Simula is an attractive language for simulating and analyzing problems in the realm of distributed computing systems.
