Biosystems engineering education in the biomedical field

The role of Biomedical Engineering consists in an identification of the needs of a health care system and of the means of meeting these needs using available technology. There is a real need for improving and restructuring education and training in the field of Biosystems Engineering. This paper presents and discusses the objectives of engineering education in the biomedical field. A scheme illustrating the relationship between engineering / biology knowledge and biomedical components, is presented. Based on this scheme, is more easy to develop a study program for undergraduate (BS), graduate (MS and PhD) and lifelong learning in the biomedical field. A curriculum for a master program in biomedical engineering is proposed. The experience of the Mechanisms, Precision Mechanics and Mechatronics Department of Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, during the past years in introducing students to Biomedical Engineering, is described.
