Disappointing morbidity nd mortality rates in many disorders have necessitated the development of several 'biological' therapies. Once approach involves the use of suicide genes, Here, Shangara Lal and colleagues discuss the development of this branch of gene therapy in cell lines and animal models, and examine current studies, therapeutic applications and clinical trials.
