Effects of Al2O3 Micro Powder Addition Amount on Characteristics of Micro-arc Oxidation Coating Formed on Magnesium Alloy

AZ31A magnesium alloy was treated by micro-arc oxidation in Al2O3 micro powder electrolyte of different concentrations to research the effects of Al2O3 micro powder addition amount on characteristics of the micro-arc oxidation coating on AZ31A. Surface morphologies of the coating was observed by SEM. Ca, Mg, O and Al element distribution was analyzed by EDS and phase composition of the coating were analyzed by XRD. Thickness and hardness of the micro-arc oxidation coating and surface charge of Al2O3 micro powder in electrolyte were measured. The modification mechanism was discussed. The results show that the oxidation voltage rises firstly and then declines gradually with Al2O3 micro powder amount increasing. The number and size of holes decrease, as well as distribution of Ca element on oxidation coating surface. Film formation efficiency declines, while the compactness of the coating and the hardness of surface porosity layer increase. The oxidation coating is mainly composed of MgO and MgO4 phase.
